We are verifying images and video posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the location of where the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
