Alina Habba has left her position as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This decision was prompted by a court battle that challenged her legal standing to serve.

Attorney General's Statement

US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, announced her stepping down on the start of the week. Bondi stated that the court's "flawed" ruling made it impossible for the official to perform her duties.

"Let no one confuse following the order as giving up," she wrote. "My fight will now reach across the country."

Judicial Challenge

Her resignation comes a week after a judicial panel ruled that she had been acting without proper authority as the top prosecutor. This ruling is expected to impact numerous criminal cases in the state.

The judicial panel said that a temporary posting that skirted Senate approval breached the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.

Future Role and Reaction

The Attorney General added that the former prosecutor will stay on at the justice department as a high-level advisor. She will challenge the decision of the disqualification, aiming for a different outcome.

In a statement, Bondi wrote that judges "must not second-guess the appointment of prosecutors entrusted with performing the fundamental role of the presidency of enforcing the law."

Performance in Office

The attorney general highlighted Habba's record and said that under her leadership, the city of Newark saw a one-fifth decrease in offenses. Additionally that the city of Camden had its first summer in 50 years without a homicide.

Legal Career

Habba, 41, was initially recruited to the former president's legal defense in 2021. She later acted for the former president in his New York criminal case in New York last year, leading to his guilty verdict on dozens of charges of document fraud.

Earlier, assuming the federal prosecutor position, Donald Trump had revealed he was appointing her as his senior adviser in a potential future term, calling her as a steadfast ally and a relentless legal advocate.
