Weather experts have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Continue In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the weather service.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, making extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on the transport network.

The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Issued

In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this indicated the weather could to trigger major effects across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is completely essential.
