During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in episode 6 has them experience a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is revealed about his research, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the children in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
