This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
