Vince Zampella, the mind behind the globally famous franchise Call of Duty, has died in a vehicle crash in California aged 55.

The tragic news was confirmed by Electronic Arts, the publisher that controls Respawn Entertainment, a game studio he co-founded.

The influential industry figure died after his car crashed and caught fire on a motorway in Los Angeles on this past Sunday, US media outlets report.

"We are facing an unimaginable loss, and our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends, his loved ones, and the countless individuals inspired by his legacy," a representative from Electronic Arts stated.
